Help us get the word out!

"Word of mouth" of "By Friend" remains the most effective way to get folks involved with the event - so why not forward this email onto folks within your networks - and together we will build this event into a premier Christian fundraising event for the Dalit kids of India. So what are you waiting for? You can even send an email to a friend straight from the website.

In The News

Belgrave Heights Christian School is launching their own version of 'Going the Extra Mile' with their students in term 2. The children will be asked to up their activity and walk a total of 50kms during the month of May and get themselves sponsored for each KM. They can complete their 50kms during school lunchtimes or at home with their parents supervising them. At the end of the month they bring in the donations and they can celebrate having done their bit for breaking the poverty cycle while getting fitter in the process. Kids helping kids - how good is that! This little guy is sure happy about it..!

Fundraising Tip #8:
Every donation to Go the Extra Mile is 100% tax deductible (for amounts over $2). This means that if your supporters are happy to donate $100 to you, they will be able to claim back a tax refund of say $20 - which in effect means that they actually donated $80. With this in mind, their donation to you could be $120! So shoot your donors this idea and explanation and you could up your donations by 20-40%. Remember you're doing this for the kids...so be brave and make the ask!

Your supporters can donate safely online by clicking here.

Training Tip #8: Team Strategy.
It's important to set a couple of ground rules about how you will complete the event. This will force everyone in your team onto the same 'page' as you work together, supporting each other. Consider the following points in question and work an answer to each one as a team: 1. What is your target time? 2. Are you walking or running? 3. What's your plan if someone slows down or drops out? Having a clear understanding & agreement of the expectations before the event will save your friendships post-event!

The Dalit life is extremely difficult. Hard physical labour is common. Even children are required to carry heavy loads during harvest season and life for an Indian Dalit child is far different from life of a child in the west.

When children are sold by their parents into bonded labour contracts, children as young as five years old will begin their working life. They work for ruthless employers whose only interest is using their cheap, child labour force to build their wealth base. Meanwhile a Dalit's childhood is squandered. It's not right and we walk to change this social injustice.

Three big hearted teachers "Go the Extra Mile" for India's Dalit children. Paul Freer, Matt Davidson and Joel Chapman are teachers from Waverley Christian College and together that have decided to join forces to walk the 50kms as TEAM WAVERLEY. It's great to see more and more schools getting involved. Being involved with the event is a great way for teachers to model to students that we can all play a part in solving the poverty issues around the world. Waverley Christian College's latest newsletter carried a front page article about their effort - you can check out the advert here.

We would like to invite families to join us at the finish of the event in the beautiful Ferny Creek Reserve from 3pm onwards for an afternoon packed with kids games including massive tug-o-war, gumboot tossing, egg catch challenge, egg spoon races and a giant soccer match. There will be face painting and a balloon artist to delight the kids - family friendly dogs are welcome. Food will be on sale at the reserve from 4pm onwards (snags, salads, cold & hot drinks, cakes) with all proceeds going to the Dalit children of India. Facilities include public hall, toilets, grassed oval, coin operated BBQ's, picnic seating around oval.

So come, be a part of welcoming home the walkers and join in their celebration at going the extra mile for the Dalit children.

Where: Ferny Creek Reserve (Melways 75 E1)
When:  May 2nd @ 3pm - late

Did you know?

  • Even simple Dalit assertions of their lawful rights and privileges have touched off hate crimes against them by members of the upper castes. These have included rape, harassment, violence and murder.

So you have been training hard and it's time for a refresher and break. Why not join us for an Easter Monday BBQ and walk in the hills - this is a great opportunity to come and meet the organisers as well as a bunch of other walkers working hard to help the Dalit kids. We'll tell you some first hand stories about the centres and the change that the centres are bringing about in the children's lives. Walkers, volunteers and friends welcome!

We're now on the hunt for volunteers - if you know folks that can help us out with various roles from general hands to trail marshalling then we'd love to hear from them. The commitment is a few hours in the beautiful bush (or like our trusty volley 'snowpea' in the photo, some general admin work).

Go here to get involved.

We walk to change the appalling situation that traps the Dalit children of India in a lifetime of extreme poverty. Through the incredible work of the Bridge of Hope centres the poverty cycle is being broken - the gospel is being preached, dignity is being restored and lives are being transformed - forever. Remember that every dollar you raise is used to bring tangible changes to countless children's lives!

April 25th @ 7.30pm.

The great folks (Jenny & Jerome) at Urban Praise are helping us get the word out! Haven't heard of them? Then click here. We'll be there with the crew presenting Go the Extra Mile. Come and join us and get involved in a unique praise experience!
